What is the thoracic inlet bound by?
T1 - Posteriorly

T12 - Posteriorly
11th and 12th ribs - Laterally
Costal cartilages ribs 7-10 and xiphosternal joint - Anteriorly
What is the location of the sternal angle?
At the lower border of T4
What lodges in the anterior groove of the 1st rib?
Subclavian vein
What lodges in the posterior groove of the 1st rib?
The subclavian artery and lowest trunk of the brachial plexus.
What does the head of the rib articulate with?
Body of the thoracic vertebrae of the same number and with the body of the vertebrae above, at the costovertebral joints (synovial plane joints)
What does the tubercle of the rib articulate with?
The transverse process of the thoracic vertebrae of the same number at the costotransverse joint (synovial plane joint).
What is the arterial supply of the thoracic wall?
Posterior intercostal arteries
Anterior intercostal arteries
Branches of axillary arteries
What is the venous drainage of the thoracic wall?
Azygos
Internal thoracic veins
Where does the left side of the chest wall drain to?
Thoracic duct -> left subclavian vein
Where does the right side of the chest wall drain to?
Right lymphatic duct -> right subclavian vein
Where does the breast drain to?
Axillary LN
Parasternal LN
Abdominal LN
What are the 3 peripheral attachments of the diaphragm?
Lumbar vertebrae and arcuate ligaments
Costal cartilages of ribs 7-12
Xiphoid process of the sternum
What is the central attachment of the diaphragm?
The central tendon
What happens to the diaphragm during inspiration?
Contracts and thoracic volume increases.
