Thorax Flashcards
Bronchoscopy
Small flexible rod with a camera can examine the entire main bronchus and remove biopsies if necessary.
Transthoracic needle biopsy
Using image guiding, a needle is inserted through the rib cage to remove tissues with a needle while the patient holds their breath. Allows for definitive diagnoses of lung tumours.
Barium swallow
A imaging procedure, where a series of x-rays (fluoroscopy) are taken while the patient swallows a barium solution. This allows physicians to see any obstructions in the pharynx or esophagus. Used to help localize an expected esophageal lesion.
Endoscopic ultrasound
A thin flexible tube with an ultrasound probe on the end is inserted down the throat to visualize the depth and extent of esophageal or lung tumours.
