Thoracic X-ray Signs Flashcards
Trachea deviation - either pushing or pulling
Pushing - Pleural effusion or tension pneumothorax
Pulling - Consolidation with lobar collapse
Hilar Enlargement - Bilateral Symmetrical
Sarcoidosis
Hilar Enlargement - Unilateral/ asymmetrical
Malignancy
Increased airspace shadowing
Consolidation/malignant lesions
Absence of lung markings within a segment of the lung field
Pneumothorax
Pleural thickening
Hydrothorax, haemothorax, hydropneumothorax or potentially mesothelioma
Heart occupying more than 50% of thoracic space (ie cardiothoracic ratio >0.5)
Cardiomegaly - valvular disease, cardiomyopathy, pericardial effusion
Free gas under diaphragm - lifting it above the liver
Bowel perforation
Loss of costophrenic angle
Fluid consolidation, hyperinflation (like in COPD)
The “Sail Sign”
Left lower lobe collapse
