Thoracic Wall Muscles Flashcards
Origin and insertion of internal intercostalis
Origin: lower border of ribs
Insertion: upper border of rib below
Origin and insertion of Innermost intercostalis
Origin: lower border of ribs
Insertion: upper border of rib below
Origin and insertion of Transversus thoracis
Origin: posterior surface of lower sternum and xiphoid
Insertion: inner surface of costal cartilages 2-6
Origin and insertion of levator costarum
Origin: transverse processes of T7-T11
Insertion: subjacent ribs between tubercle and angle
Action of external intercostals
Elevates ribs in inspiration
Action of internal intercostalis
Depress ribs in costal part and elevate ribs in interchondral part
Innermost intercostals
Elevate ribs
Transversus thoracis action
Depress ribs
Subcostalis action
Elevated ribs
Levator costarum
Elevated ribs
Diaphragm origin and attachment
Origin: xiphoid process, lower 6 costal cartilages, L1-L3 vertebrae
Attachment: converge into central tendon
Innervation of diaphragm
Phrenic nerve
Action of diaphragm
Draws central tendon down and forward during inspiration
Blood supply for diaphragm
Pericardiophrenic, musculophrenic, superior and inferior phrenic arteries
