Thoracic Spine Focused Flashcards
What is the zygapophyseal joint?
Formed between the superior articular processes of the lower vertebra and the inferior articular process of the upper vertebra. Also known as facet joints.
Which anatomical landmarks form the thoracic cage?
12 pairs of ribs and the sternum
What are the functions of the thoracic cage?
To protect the organs
To form a joint between the upper limbs and the axial skeleton
To provide attachments for the muscles
What are costal facets?
Attachments for the ribs
What are costo-transverse articulations?
Facet where the rib articulates with the lateral aspect of the transverse processes.
Where does the aorta lie in relation to the anterior to the spine?
On the left side between T4 and T12
In what plane are the thoracic facets orientated?
60° to the axial plane (horizontal) and 20° to the frontal plane (vertical)
How many layers of muscle are there posteriorly in the thoracic spine and what are the layers called?
- Superficial, intermediate and deep.
