Thoracic Orthopedic Tests Flashcards
Adson’s Test
- Positive test = loss of pulse or recreation of symptoms
- Indicates compression between anterior and middle scalenes
Hyperabduction Maneuver (Wright’s Test)
- Positive test = recreation of symptoms
- Indicates compression by pec minor
Costoclavicular Maneuver
- Positive test is loss of pulse
- Indicates compression between first rib and clavicle
Roos Test
- Positive test = unable to perform test for 3 minutes
- Indicates TOS on affected side
Spinal Percussion Test
-Indicates fracture if localized pain or disc lesion if Px travels
Adam’s Test
-Indicates functional vs structural scoliosis
Forrestier’s Test
-Indicates ankylosing spondylitis if ipsilateral spinal muscles spasm
Shepelmann’s Sign
- Px on concave side = intercostal neuritis
- Px on convex side = intercostal myofascitis
Costovertebral Stress Test
- Px = costovertebral irritation
- Loss of caliper movement = fixation of caliper movement
Chest Expansion Test
- Decrease of measurement = trauma, ankylosing spondylitis
- Normal = 3 inches in males and 1.5 in females
Posterior Respiratory Excursion
- Asymmetry of thumbs = collapsed lung, pneumonia, rib problems
Rib Motion Test
- Rib doesn’t move inferior during expiration = fixed elevated rib
- Rib doesn’t move superior during inhalation = fixed inferior rib
Sternal Compression Test
-Px (local or spread along the rib) = fracture
Lateral Chest Compression (Rib compression)
- Px at costosternal junction = local inflammation
- Px at back = costovertebral or costotransverse lesions
- Px at lateral rib angle = fracture
