Inferior attachment: superior border of ribs below
Action: internal- during forced inspiration = elevate ribs; external and innermost- during forced inspiration = interosseous part depresses ribs, interchondral part elevates ribs

A

Superior attachment: posterior surface of lower sternum
Inferior attachment: internal surface of costal cartilages 2-6
Action: weakly depresses ribs
Innervation: intercostal nerve

A

Origin: external surfaces of 5th-12th ribs
Insertion: linea alba, pubic tubercle, anterior half of iliac crest
Action: compress and support abdominal viscera; flex and rotate trunk
Innervation: thoracoabdominal nerves (anterior rami of T7-T11) and subcostal nerve

A

Origin: thoracolumbar fascia, anterior 2/3 of iliac crest, C.T. Deep to inguinal ligament
Insertion: inferior borders of 10th-12th ribs, linea alba, pubis via conjoint tendon
Action: compress and support abdominal viscera; flex and rotate trunk
Innervation: thoracoabdominal nerves (anterior rami of T7-T11) and subcostal and 1st lumbar nerve

A

Origin: internal surface of 7th-12th costal cartilages, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest and C.T. Deep to inguinal ligament
Insertion: linea alba with aponeurosis of itnernal oblique, pubic crest, pubis via conjoint tendon
Action: compresses and supports abdominal viscera
Innervation: thoracoabdominal nerves (anterior rami of T7-T11) and subcostal and 1st lumbar nerve

Rectus abdominis

A

Origin: pubic symphysis and pubic crest
Insertion: xiphoid process and 5th-7th costal cartilages
Action: flexes trunk, compresses abdominal viscera, stabilizes and controls tilt of pelvis
Innervation: thoracoabdominal and subcostal nerves (anterior rami of T7-T12 spinal nerves)
