Thompson 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Lower motor neruon injury***
A
- decreased reflexes
- decreased tone
- muscle atrophy
2
Q
Upper motor neuron injury***
A
- spasticity
- increased tone
- increased reflexes
3
Q
Brown-sequard sydrome
A
- ipsilateral paresis, loss of vibration and proprioception
- contralateral loss pain and temp
4
Q
Cauda equina syndrome****
A
- From peripheral nerve injury (low back injuries)
- motor/sensory loss lower extremity and pelvic region
- BOWEL and BLADDER DYSFUNCTION
- Saddle anesthesia
- EMERGENCY!!!!!
5
Q
CLEARING A C-SPINE AFTER TRAUMA!!!****
A
NEXUS CRITERIA
- No bony tenderness
- no neuro deficits
- no intox
- no altered level of consciousness
- no distracting injuries
6
Q
hospital care suspected spine injury
A
- ABCDEs
- life threatening injuries get priority
- GET THEM OFF THE BOARD
7
Q
Lumbar spine injury
A
- Very common with calcaneal fractures
- Transverse fractures of L1 assocaited with renal injury
8
Q
Chance Fractrues
A
- Horizontal fracture through spinous process, lamina, pedicle and vertebral body
- 50% have organ involvement (abdominal injuries)
- MVCs (seatbelt) and falls
9
Q
Calcaneal fx
A
- 10% have assocaited lumbar injury
- 26% other injury
- CHECK Urine analysis if suspicious
10
Q
long term podiatric care of spinal injuries
A
- Increased risk of fractures (because no weight bearing –> osteopenic)
- hypertrophic skin changes –> higher lesion/longer injury
- Hypertrophic nail chainges –> higher the lesion/longer injury
- PRESSURE ULCERS
- DVT
11
Q
Spinal cord injury without radiographic abnormality (peds)
A
- 25-50% peds spinal injury –> have no imaging abnormality
- vertebral bodied are displaced, then return into place so not visible on xray
- WEAK, BURNING, PARESTHESIA
