A
- Slower onset, polyuria, dehydration, hypotension
- absence of abdominal pain, no vomiting, no nausea, NO KUSSMAUL BREATHING

A
- HHS has HIGHER MORTALITY (pts normally older and have more comorbidities

A
pH is lower in DKA vs HHS

Who is at risk for HHS
A
Uncontrolled type 2 diabetics
- higher age/more comorbidities
precipitating stress can trigger it

what is criteria for diagnosis
A
Glu 600
Osmo 320 (usually high Na)
Dehydration
Ph 7.3 (not extremely low)
Bicarb 15
Ketonuria with no or small ketonemia
Mental status change

A1c criteria for DM and IGT
A
- Above 6.5% in DM
- Impaired glucose tolerance = 5.7% to 6.4%

What is Tx of HHS
A
Lots of fluids
normalize electrolyes (Potassium and Sodium)
Slow with insulin (wait until mroe hydrated)

What medications can increase glucose
A
contraceptives
barbituates
hydrchlorathiazide
corticosteroids
