Thomas hobbed published de homine in 1658 which outlined ideas of materialism- the idea that nothing exists but matter and its movements and modifications.
this meant that concepts such as the soul and the existence of witchcraft could be questioned.

importantly, the idea of materialism introduced entirely new attitudes that challenged the old ways of thinking that motivated witch hunts. this was because spectral evidence and witness testimony were accepted as evidence.

hobbes was highly influentual during this time period in the short term and long term as his work was highly respected. this is particularly important as it meant his ideas were taken seriously and held to a high esteem which meant he could push forward new ideas well. this demonstrates the importance he had in contributing to declining beliefs in magic.
materialism
as hobbes was a materialist, this meant that there was no room for the existence of spirits. a crucial argument was that paranormal activity such as cases of possession were actually the result of madness or poisoning, not witchcraft. therefore, materialism goes a long way in explaining why beliefs in witchcraft declined

His ideas became very fashionable in the early 18th century when the final cases of witchcraft were being investigated and sceptical opinion was at its peak. thus his influence meant that all approached cases of witchcraft with a rational mindset was influenced by the work of Hobbes.
