How may a bacterial conjunctivitis progress to become an ophthalmic emergency?
- corneal ulceration (bacterial keratitis)
- frequent strong abx
How does a detached retina present?
- flashes (retinal traction)
- floaters (vitreous haemorrhage)
- field loss (detached retina)
- sudden painless vision loss if complete detachment
How do you treat retinal detachment?
surgery
What symptoms would worry you accompanying periorbital eye swelling?
- diplopia
- proptosis
- ophthalmoplegia
Red eye, severe pain, headaches, N&V, fixed mid-dilated pupil. Wagwan?
-Acute closed angle glaucoma
How do you treat an acute closed angle glaucoma?
- pilocrapine drops (parasympathmometic)
- alpha agonist drops
- beta blocker IV
- systemic carbhonic anhydrase inhibitors IV
- iridotomy
How do you treat orbital cellulitis?
- high dose IV abx
- abscess drainage
What is an afferent pupillary defect?
- light swinging test
- both pupils will dilate when the affected eye is illuminated
A patient has a sudden painless loss of vision in their right eye. A vague history of “mini-strokes”. What is the likely diagnosis?
- Central retinal artery occlusion
- Hx of amaurosis fugax is suggestive of artery occlusion not vein.
