What is cataracts by defintion?

A

-opacification of the eye lens which leads to various forms of visual defects most prominently decreased visual acuity

What is the natural course of cataracts?

A
  • asymptomatic for years
  • short-sightedness
  • decreased visual acuity (blurred, fractured, decreased colours)
  • +/- glares, halos, double vision (depends on sort of cataract)

What is a simple test for cataract?

A
  • flash a light in the patients eye look for red reflex

- would be absent in cataract

What is the treatment of cataract?

A
  • artificial lens replacement under local anaesthetic

- day case + 24 hour visual rehab

  • capsule rupture + vitreous prolapse

- intraocular haemorrhage

What are the symptoms of and how do you treat Endophthalmitis? Why is it SO important to do so?

A
  • painful red eye + decreased vision w/in 1/52 of surgery
  • Intraocular ABX
  • can lead to permanent blindness
