Third Line of Defense Flashcards
Is the third line a specific defense?
Yes
Antigens
any molecule that body defines as foreign
Lymphatic System
group of organs and tissues (lymph, spleen) that stores cells to fight infections
B-cell
fights infections by forming antibodies
-triggered and activated by helper t-cells
-engulf pathogen and display antigen on cell body
T- cells
fights infections by destroying cells that have been infected
B-cells and the spleen
use spleen as a staging area to make plasma cells and antibodies
T-cells and the spleen
use white pulp of the spleen as a place to multiply before attacked nonself cells
Lymph nodes
acts as a filter to catch any bacteria or pathogen
Humoral Immune response
-takes place in blood and lymph
-combats pathogens directly using b-cells
-helper t-cell binds to antigens and b-cell turns into plasma cell
-plasma cell release antibodies and they mark pathogens for phagocytosis
Cell Mediated Response
-destroys body cells infected
Cytotoxic t-cells
release toxins when encountering a virus infected cell
Regulatory t-cells
end immune response to prevent t-cells from attacking own antigens
Active Immunity
results from memory cells being produced after fighting a pathogen
Passive Immunity
occurs when antibodies are transferred to an individual who has never been exposed to the pathogen
-ex. mother to child when child is fetus
