Second Line of Defense Flashcards
Is the second line a specific defense?
No, it is a non specific defense that will stay the same for all pathogens
Phagocytosis
nonspecific WBC’s engulf and break down any type of pathogen
Inflammatory response
-first response to tissue damage or infection
-body senses danger = histamine release = alert defenses
-blood vessels in the area dilate to increase temp and pressure
Complement proteins
-20 proteins that locate invading pathogens and attract phagocytes to kill pathogen through lysis
Natural killer cells
can kill infected or abnormal body cells without waiting for anyone else
-they are WBC’s that develop in lymph
Interferons
-releases by cells that have been invaded by viruses
-encourage other cells to put up defenses
