Third Line of Defence Flashcards
What are B-lymphocytes?
B lymphocytes create a type of protein called an antibody. These antibodies bind to pathogens to neutralize them.
What are T-lymphocytes? Name the 3 cells as well
They are a type of white blood cell. They help fight infections in the immune system. There are Helper T cells, Killer T cells and Memory Cells.
What are Helper T cells?
Helper T-cells are a type of immune cell. When they sense an infection, they activate other immune cells to fight it
What are Killer T cells?
Killer T cells possess special molecular weapons that enable them to directly attack and destroy recognisable targets
What are Memory T cells?
Memory T cells are antigen-specific T cells that remain long-term after an infection has been eliminated.
What are memory cells?
A long-lived immune cell that can recognize a foreign particle that it previously fought and create a stronger immune response.
What is a vaccine?
A vaccine is a biological preparation that provides active immunity to a particular infectious disease
what is herd immunity?
resistance to the spread of an infectious disease within a population of a high proportion of individuals as a result of previous infection or vaccination.
