Thinking Distance Flashcards
What is thinking distance?
Thinking distance - It takes time for the driver to react to a situation. During this reaction time the car carries on moving. The thinking distance is the distance travelled in between the driver realising he needs to brake and actually braking.
What is the braking distance?
Braking distance - The braking distance is the distance taken to stop once the brakes are applied.
What can increase thinking distance?
Greater speed.
Tiredness.
Alcohol and drugs.
Distractions (using a mobile phone).
What can increase braking distance?
Greater speed.
Poor road conditions (icy, wet).
Car conditions (bald tyres, poor brakes, full of people).
How does speed effect stopping distance?
Thinking distance and braking distance depend on the speed. The stopping distance is much further for faster speeds. This is why you should keep distance from car in front especially if road conditions are poor.
What is stopping distance equal to?
Stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance.
What is the equation for deceleration?
v2-u2
A=_________
2s
What does the braking force needed to stop a vehicle in a given a distance depend on?
The speed of the vehicle when the breaks are first applied.
The mass of the vehicle.
What is the equation of braking force of a vehicle?
F=ma.
