What is the systemic phase of care about?
Collecting information regarding medical history prior to treatment.
What kind of things are involved in the systemic phase of care?
- Checking blood pressure
* Checking blood glucose
Why is the systemic phase of care necessary?
It is important for:
• Precautions
• Allergies / adverse reactions
• Determine need for modification of treatment plan, oral hygiene education and instruction
What does the control phase of care entail?
What is the goal of the control phase?
C/C - all the relevant questions.
Goals
• Relieve pain
• Stabilise infection or oral disease
What does the conservation stage entail?
Whatever we are doing in pre-clinic.
- Dental, diet, social/family histories
- E/O and I/O examinations
- API/SBI/ PSR
- Oral hygiene education and instructions
- Periodontal chart, if required
- Radiographs, if indicated
- Determine periodontal classification
• Develop treatment plan
What does post- conservation entail?
Conduct 6-week Review
• Assess response to care
• Review oral hygiene practices
• Smokers: smoking status
Conduct 3-month Review • Perio chart • Determine overall prognosis * Determine need for second course of care • Referrals
What does the correction phase of care entail?
May occur during or post non- surgical therapy to restore function, stability and aesthetics. • Replacement of missing teeth • Periodontal surgery • Orthodontics • Prosthodontics
What does the maintenance phase of care entail?
• Recall visits dependent on patient needs where the following takes place:
- Review and update medical and smoking history
- Extra- and intra- oral examinations
- Perio chart (minimum of once yearly)
- Supra- and sub- gingival exploration
- Re-instrumentation of bleeding sites
- Polishing and application of fluoride, as required
