Things im struggling with - exam prep Flashcards
What is the HPA and how does it help
Hypothalamic pituitary axis. Secretes glucocorticoids e.g. cortisol. Works slower (within minutes) This suppresses insulin secretion, allows muscles to function longer and supresses the immune system.
What does the HPA secrete
Glucocorticoids eg cortisol
What is the SAM and how does it help
Sympathetic nervous system – initial response. Acts within seconds to stimuli. Secretes catecholamines. This stimulates the cardiovascular system to work harder and beat blood. Increases alertness and respiration system. Fight or flight reaction.
What does SAM secrete
catecholamines
Catecholamines
secreted by the SAM
Glucocorticoids
Secreted by HPA
What is adipose tissue?
An organ within the body which secretes adipokines
What is leptin?
An adipokine secreted to reduce appetite. Obese animals resist this meaning their appetite doesn’t function correctly
What is adiponectin?
An adipokine lower in obese animals. Enhances insulin sensitivity and anti-inflammatory.
What is a sequential introduction?
introducing a few at a time until all animals have met in a neutral environment.
What is biofilm?
contaminates pure water
How do you treat biofilm?
Reverse osmosis and filter to remove the bacteria
Which mouse strain is most aggressive?
White
