things i couldnt remember. pt. 1 Flashcards
Why is a crystal of pure calcium carbonate made in a lab not a sample of the mineral calcite?
The one made in the lab was not naturally created.
What is the main reason a mineralogist identifies minerals?
To see the why/how of where they came from and to learn about other surrounding past/present geologic features.
Under what conditions do geologists believe most crystals formed?
In a dissolved mineral deposits (hot springs), or in cooling magma.
Why do you suppose that water was used for comparing the densities of other substances in order to compute specific gravity?
It has a specific gravity (and density??) of 1.
What is the difference between an oxide mineral and a mineral that contains the element oxygen?
One is a mixture (the later) and one is a compound (the former).
