Rock Classification 4 Flashcards
List the main qualities of limestone.
(I/S/M, C/NC, F/NF I/E, O, Any minerals that it can contain)
Sedimentary, nonclastic (mainly a precipitate of calcium carbonate), can also be organic (called conquina, made crinoids, brachiopods, ammonites).
(generally light in color, white/gray to yellowish)
List the main qualities of halite.
(I/S/M, C/NC, F/NF I/E, O, Any minerals that it can contain)
Sedimentary, nonclastic (precipitation), typically white or colorless.
Salt domes: Halite deposits squeezed upward by pressure. ; typically colorless or white, but may also be light blue, dark blue, purple, pink, red, orange, yellow or gray depending on inclusion of other materials, impurities, and structural or isotopic abnormalities in the crystal
List the main qualities of chalk.
(I/S/M, C/NC, F/NF I/E, O, Any minerals that it can contain)
Sedimentary, nonclastic, organic (contains foraminifera and coccoliths), typically white.
What is processed limestone?
Sand and gravel (concrete)
What is tuff?
Form of Breccia made of volcanic ash.
(color can range from gray, beige/orange
