What happens in chapter 1
We learn about Okonkwo, and how he was the best wrestler in all of the 9 villages.
What happens in chapter 2
the town crier rings the ogene/ gong, and gathers all of the clansmen in the market to discuss the murdering of a wife of an Umuofia tribesman, by someone from the village of Mbaino.
What happens in chapter 3
Okonkwo built his fortune alone as a sharecropper because Unoka was never able to have a successful harvest. Unoka visits the Oracle and is told that he failed because of his laziness, he also goes on to die due to a shameful illness.
What happens in chapter 4
The clan decides that Ikemefuna will stay with Okonkwo. At first Ikemefuna is very homesick and starts vomiting, but Nwoye’s mother treats him as one of her own.
What happens in chapter 5
Umuofia starts preparing for the Feast of the New Yam. After beating his second wife, Ekwefi, over what he thinks is a dead plant, Okonkwo points a gun at her, shoots at her, and misses.
What happens in chapter 6
The wrestling begins with matches between boys ages fifteen and sixteen. Maduka, the son of Okonkwo’s friend Obierika, wins one match within seconds.
What happens in chapter 7
The death of Ikemefuna, who is sentenced to die by the Umuofian oracle.
What happens in chapter 8
Okonkwo is mourning over the death of Ikemefuna.
What happens in chapter 9
Okonkwo’s daughter Ezinma almost dies of a sickness, this is also the first time that we see Okonkwo really working about someone and showing affection.
What happens in chapter 10
The egwugwu take the form of masked men, and everyone suspects that Okonkwo is among them. They are only men impersonating spirits, Giving people advice about their problems.
What happens in chapter 11
The Oracle (Agbala) instructs Chilo to bring Ezinma to him. He pleads with her but she has to. Okonkwo’s second wife says that she will come with them but chilo tells her that if she does she will be cursed because no one can go to the oracle unless summoned. She does it anyways and the Okonkwo comes to.
What happens in chapter 12
They have a wedding ceremony.
What happens in chapter 13
They use an ekwe, or small wooden drum, to announce Ezeudu’s death. As one of the village’s oldest men, he is given a warrior’s funeral where guns are fired and drums are beaten. Then Okonkwo tries to fire a gun too but it explodes sending a piece into Ezeudu’s son killing him. And because he killed him, Okonkwo and his family have to leave the village for seven years so that the village doesn’t get cursed by the goddess of the earth.
