it is the most fundamental unit of society and its structure can be expanded to fit a whole community

why do the ibgo’s like to have an extended family setting
it helps with the upbringing of the children
it reduced finacial burden and woes of the elderly members of the household (becuase all work together)

- Okonkwo beated his wives (defender of honor)
- taking in of Ikemefuna shows the extened family household
- Ezinma and her mother showed that they fit the ideal mother daughter relation as she was under her mothers influence 24/7
reasons why Okonkwo’s family DID NOT fit the ideal igbo family
- Unoka (okonkwos father) was very ill-fated and died at an early age. there was nothing for okonkwo to inherate so they did not follow the ideal
