built between 12th and 13th centuries in Granada. Both Islamic and Christian architectural elements. Tourist attraction. Courts, fountains, gardents, etc. 1984 named UNESCO World Heritage Site

Inquisition
Court established in 1480. Purpose was to punish heretics, witchcraft, blasphemy, etc. Ensured orthodoxy of Jewish and Muslim converts to Christianity. Abolished in 1834.
Spanish Armada
more than 130 ships and 20,000 sailors. Sent in 1588 by King Felipe II to try to destroy Queen Elizabeth I, but was defeated. Marked point of Spanish empire decline.

between Nationalists and Republicans. Started in 1936. Ended in 1939. Franco established dictatorship.

House of Bourbon is a European royal house that has French origins, significant influence in Europe. Carlos II, Carlos V. Etc.
Reconquista
Attempt for Spaniards to recover their land from Muslims and restore Catholic faith.
Muslims in Spain
711, invated the Iberian Peninsula. Now Arab influence can be seen everywhere. (algebra, aldea, alguacil, alcoba, algodon, etc) and the word ojalá.
El cantar del mio Cid
Anonymously written in 1140. Singing poem. Takes place during Reconquista. the Cid is known as the man who unified Spain during the Reconquista.
