Psoas Major m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood supply
Origin: transverse processes of L1-L5 and vertebral bodies of T12-L5
Insertion: lesser trochanter of the femur
Action: laterally flex the vertebral column, balances and flexes the trunk, flexes the thigh when acting with iliacus (together as Iliopsoas m.)
Innervation: lumbar plexus L1-3
Blood supply: lumbar branch of iliolumbar a.
Iliacus m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood Supply
Origin: superior iliac fossa, ala of sacrum and anterior sacroiliac l.
Insertion: lesser trochanter of femur, femoral shaft and psoas major t.
Action: flex the thigh and stabilize hip joint
Innervation: femoral n.
Blood Supply: medial femoral circumflex a., iliac branch of iliolumbar a.
Sartorius m. (longest muscle of the body)
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood supply
Origin: anterior superior iliac spine
Insertion: medial aspect proximal end of tibia (1/3 of pes anserine)
Action: flex, abduct and laterally rotate thigh; flex leg at knee
Innervation: femoral n.
Blood supply: superficial femoral a, lateral circumflex femoral a, geniculate branch of popliteal a
Rectus Femoris m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood supply
Origin: straight head- anterior inferior iliac spine, reflected head- ilium above acetabelum
Insertion: base of patella; tibial tuberosity via the patellar l.
Action: extend leg at knee; assist Iliopsoas m. in thigh flexion
Innervation: femoral n.
Blood Supply: lateral femoral circumflex a.
Vastus Lateralis m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood supply
Origin: greater trochanter, lateral lip of linea aspera
Insertion: lateral aspect of base of patella, tibial tuberosity via the patellar l.
Action: extend leg at knee
Innervation: femoral n.
Blood supply: lateral femoral circumflex a.
Vastus Intermedius m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood Supply
Origin: anterior and lateral surface of femoral body
Insertion: base of patella, tibial tuberosity via patellar l.
Action: extend leg at knee
Innervation: femoral n.
Blood Supply: lateral circumflex femoral a.
Vastus Medialis m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood Supply
Origin: intertrochanteric line, medial line of linea aspera
Insertion: medial aspect of base of patella, tibial tuberosity via patellar l.
Action: extend leg at knee
Innervation: femoral n.
Blood Supply: femoral a, deep femoral a, superior medial genicular branch of popliteal artery
Articularis Genu m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood Supply
Origin: anterior surface of distal femur
Insertion: articular capsule of knee
Action: tightens capsule of knee during leg extension
Innervation: femoral n.

Adductor Longus m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood Supply
Origin: body of pubis inferior to pubic crest
Insertion: middle 1/3 of linea aspera
Action: adduct thigh
Innervation: anterior division of obturator n.
Blood Supply: obturator a, medial circumflex femoral a.
Adductor Brevis m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood Supply
Origin: body and inferior pubic ramus
Insertion: pectineal line and proximal linea aspera
Action: adduct thigh; assist in thigh flexion
Innervation: anterior division of obturator
Blood Supply: obturator a, medial circumflex femoral a.
Adductor Magnus m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood Supply
Origin: ischiopubic ramus and ischial tuberosity
Insertion: gluteal tuberosity, linea aspera, medial supracondylar line, and adductor tubercle
Action: whole muscle- adduct thigh, upper fibers- flex thigh, lower fibers- extend thigh
Innervation: upper fibers- posterior division obturator n. Lower fibers- tibial division sciatic n.
Blood Supply: medial circumflex femoral a, obturator a, some superior branches of popliteal a.
Gracilis m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood Supply
Origin: inferior pubic ramus and body of pubis
Insertion: medial aspect proximal end of tibia (part of pes anserine)
Action: adduct the thigh and assist in medial thigh rotation, flex the leg
Innervation: anterior division obturator n.
Blood Supply: obturator a, medial circumflex femoral a, muscular branches of deep femoral a.
Biceps Femoris m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood Supply
Origin: long head- ischial tuberosity, short head- linea aspera and lateral supracondylar line
Insertion: lateral aspect fibular head
Action: both heads- flex and laterally rotate leg when flexed, long head- extend thigh
Innervation: long head- tibial division of sciatic n. Short head- common fibular division of sciatic n.
Blood Supply: perforating branches of deep femoral a, inferior gluteal a, superior muscular branches of popliteal a.
Semitendinosus m.
Origin Insertion Action Innervation Blood Supply
Origin: ischial tuberosity
Insertion: medial aspect proximal end of tibia (part of pes anserine)
Action: extend thigh, flex and medially rotate leg when flexed
Innervation: tibial division of sciatic n.
Blood Supply: perforating branches of deep femoral a, inferior gluteal a, superior muscular branches of popliteal a.
