Thermoregulation Flashcards
Different forms of heat exchange
Conduction- physical contact
Convection- fluid flow
Radiation- emission of radiant heat
How is body temperature regulated
Negative feedback loops
body temp -> hypothalamus -> muscle shivering
What are some of the major effectors
What are some of the strategies used to conserve or shed heat?
How is counter-current exchange useful in thermoregulation?
The exchange allows most of the heat to be transferred (opposite directions)
- veins return warm blood -> body
- arteries transport blood -> tongue
- warm blood -> cold feet
Endotherms and Ectotherms
Endotherms- produce substantial body heat regardless of environment
Ectotherms- depends on external sources
Mammals use 10x more energy than reptiles
Homeotherms and Heterotherms?
Homeotherms- constant body temperature
Heterotherms- allows surrounding environment to effect
