Thermodynamics Vocabulary Flashcards
Isentropic process
An idealized thermodynamic process that is both a diabetic and reversible
Isobaric process
Pressure stays constant, the heat transferred to the system does work
Adiabatic process
One that occurs without transfer of heat or matter between a thermodynamic system and its surroundings. Energy is transferred to its surroundings in the form of work
1st law of thermodynamics
The total energy of an isolated system is constant. Energy can be transformed from one form to another, but can neither be created nor destroyed
2nd law of thermodynamics
The total entropy of an isolated system can never decrease over time
In all spontaneous processes the total entropy always increases and the process is irreversible
3rd law of thermodynamics
The entropy of all perfect crystalline solids is zero at absolute zero temperature
Entropy
Entropy is the expression of the disorder, or randomness, of a system, or of our lack of information about it.
