Thermodynamics Quiz/Quest Flashcards
What is thermo?
Heat
What is dynamics?
Movement
What is heat?
The transfer of energy due to differences in temp.
How is heat transferred?
By moving atoms
What is temperature?
The average kinetic energy of an objects particles
What is thermal energy?
Total kinetic energy of an objects particles; or concentrated heat
What is internal energy?
Rotational kinetic energy of molecules, movement of atoms inside molecules, and all energy due to forces between molecules
What is the 1st law of thermodynamics?
Energy is conserved
What is the consequence of the 1st law?
There is no perpetual motion because heat energy is lost so things will eventually run out of energy
What is the 2nd law of thermodynamics?
Entropy is always increasing; thermal energy goes from hot to cold, unless outside energy is applied
What is the consequence of the 2nd law?
We can construct a positive arrow of time
What is the 3rd law of thermodynamics?
Absolute zero can’t be achieved!!
What is absolute zero?
-273.15 Celsius
Or
-459.67 Fahrenheit
What is the consequence of the 3rd law?
Atoms that do achieve absolute zero will implode
What is the zeroth law?
If 2 systems are in equilibrium with a 3rd system they are in equilibrium with each other
