Thermodynamics Flashcards
What is the 1st law of Thermodynamics?
- Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
What is the 2nd law of Thermodynamics?
- For spontaneous process, the entropy of the universe increases.
What is the 3rd law of Thermodynamics?
- A perfect crystal at O Kelvin have zero entropy.
1 st Law of Thermodynamics
Delta E =
Delta E = q + w
q=heat
w= work
What is “Expansion”
Delta V > 0, (w is negative)
What is “compression”
Delta V is negative.
work is positive
If the system does work on the surroundings……
The system loses energy. W is negative
If the surroundings do work on the system…….
The system gains energy. W is positive
If 100J of heat was transferred from the system to the surroundings then:
It is -100
If 50 of work was performed by surroundings on the system:
It is -50
Heat transferred into the system:
system gains energy. Q is positive
Work done by the system:
System loses energy.
What are some state functions:
Delta G, Delta H, Delta S
What are not state functions?
q & w
Equation for Endothermic
Delta H > 0
