Gases Flashcards
Volume
(Liters; 1cm^3= 1mL)
Ideal Gas Law Assumptions:
- Gas molecules have no volume( Good @ low P)
2. No intermolecular attractions between molecules( all collisions are elastic) —–Good @ high T
Pressure
1atm=760 torr = 760 mmhg
STP
0 Celcius and 1 atm
1 mole of gas =
22.4L @ STP
Ideal Gas Law Formula
and when is it most accurate in?
PV=nRT
most accurate at low pressures, high temp, or gases w low intermolecular forces.
Boyle’s Law
P ~ 1/V
PV= constant
If pressure is 1/5, then volume is 5 times bigger
If one goes up, the other goes down.
Charle’s Law
V ~ T
If temperature doubles, volume doubles.
Avogadro’s Law
V ~ n
V/n = constant.
Combined gas law:
P1V1/n1T1 = P2V2/n2T2
Dalton’s Law of partial Pressures:
Ptot = Pa + Pb
Gas Density Formulas:
d= m/V and M=m/n
Graham’s Law of Effusion
r2/r1 = square root of M1/M2
