Thermodynamics Flashcards
Energy
Exists in many forms, such as heat, light, chemical energy, and electrical energy.
Energy is the ability to bring about change or to do work.
Thermodynamics
Thermo - heat, dynamics - movement
The science that deals with the relationships and conversions between heat and other forms of energy.
The study of energy.
Zeroth Law
If two systems are in thermal equilibrium with a third system, they must be in thermal equilibrium with each other.
If A = B and B = C, then A = C.
First Law
Conservation of energy—energy can be neither created nor destroyed. However, energy can change forms, and energy can flow from one place to another. The total energy of an isolated system does not change.
Second Law
Heat flows from hot to cold.
There are limits on converting energy from one form to another – never 100% efficient.
For a closed system, disorder (entropy) increases.
Energy spontaneously disperses from being localized to becoming spread out, evolving towards thermodynamic equilibrium—the state of maximum entropy of the system.
Third Law
The entropy of a perfect crystal of any pure substance approaches zero as the temperature approaches absolute zero.
Absolute zero is 0 K.
Atoms stop moving.
Conduction
The transfer of energy (heat) between objects that are in physical contact.
Convection
The movement of energy (air/heat) from hot places to cold places.
The transfer of energy between an object and its environment, due to fluid motion.
Radiation
Emission of light.
The transfer of energy from the movement of charged particles within atoms is converted to electromagnetic radiation.
