Thermodynamics Flashcards
What is the 1st law of thermodynamics?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. But it can be converted into one form into another.
What is the equation for the first law of thermodynamics?
ΔU = Q - W
ΔU = change in internal energy of the system
Q = heat energy added to the system
W = work done by the system
How to write out the standard enthalpy of combustion?
ΔcH°298
Δ = change of
c = combustion
(can use r = reaction
f = formation)
H = enthalpy
° = standard pressure
298 = temperature at which state function is reported
What is Hess’ law?
The total enthalpy change for a chemical reaction is independent of the path by which the reaction occurs and depends only on the initial and final states.
What happens to the enthalpy of a substance when the temperature increases?
The enthalpy increases.
