Gases Flashcards
What is Boyle’s law?
At constant temperature, the volume of a fixed amount of gas is inversely proportional to its pressure.
What is the equation for Boyle’s law?
P1V1 = P2V2
What does the graph look like for Boyle’s law?
y axis = pressure
x axis = volume
An inversely proportional curve.
What is Charles’ law?
The volume of a fixed amount of gas, at a constant pressure is proportional to the absolute temperature.
What is the equation for Charles’ law?
V1/T1 = V2/T2.
What does the graph look like for Charles’ law?
y axis = volume
x axis = temperature
Line is straight and intersects the x axis at 0K.
What is Avagadro’s law?
Equal volumes of gases at constant temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of moles. At standard temperature and pressure.
What is the equation for Avagadro’s law?
V1/n1 = V2/n2.
What does the graph look like for Avagadro’s law?
x axis = moles
y axis = volume
Directly proportional graph.
What is the ideal gas law?
PV = nRT
What is R in the ideal gas equation, and what is its value?
R = gas constant
R = 8.314 Jk-1mol-1
What are the values of standard temperature and pressure?
Temperature = 273K
Pressure = 1 atmosphere
What is the conversion between atmospheres and pascals?
1 atmosphere = 101.3KPa
What are the SI units for the ideal gas equation?
P = Pa
V = m3
n = mol
R = JK-1mol-1
T = K
What is Dalton’s law?
The total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is the sum of the partial pressures of each individual gas.
