Thermodynamics Flashcards
The study of the energy effect/change of chemical reaction
Thermodynamics or Thermochemistry
A number of substances and interactions proceeding in a limited volume
Chemical System
A chemical system that can be measured
Parameters
A chemical system that’s absolute values can’t be measured
Functions of state
Heat is liberated into the surroundings
Exothermic
Heat is absorbed from surroundings
Endothermic
The energy cannot be created nor destroyed.
FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS
The enthalpy change when 1 mol of a pure substance is formed from its elements
Standard Enthalpy of Formation
Processes that can proceed without any outside intervention
Spontaneous Processes
Can be thought of as a measure of the randomness in a system
Entropy
Type of process which needs the use of energy to make it happen.
Non spontaneous
refers to the number of ways the energy of a system can be dispersed through the motion of its particles
Entropy
