Thermodynamics Flashcards
Enthalpy change of formation
The EC when 1 mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard states under standard conditions
Lattice Enthalpy of formation
The EC when 1 mole of a solid ionic compound is formed from its gaseous ions under standard conditions
Lattice Enthalpy of dissociation
The EC when 1 mole of a solid ionic compound is dissociated into it’s gaseous ions under standard conditions
Enthalpy change of combustion
The EC when 1 mole of of a substance undergoes complete combustion in oxygen with all substances in their SS
Ionisation enthalpy
The EC when 1 mole of gaseous atoms looses 1 e- per atom to produce 1+ gaseous ions
Electron affinity
The EC when 1 mole of gaseous atoms gains 1 e- per atom to from gaseous 1- ions
Enthalpy of atomisation
The EC when 1 mole of gaseous atoms is produced from an element in it’s SS
Hydration enthalpy
The EC when 1 mole of gaseous ions become hydrated (dissolved in water)
Enthalpy of solution
The EC when 1 mole of an ionic solid dissolves in an amount of water large enough so that the dissolved ions are well separated and don’t interact with each other
Bond dissociation enthalpy
The EC when 1 mole of covalent bonds is broken in the gaseous state
