Thermodynamics Flashcards
What is an exothermic reaction?
If the bonds of the product are stable, the potential energy decreases->the enthalpy and internal energies decrease->surplus amount of energy is released, this is called exothermic reaction.
What is an endothermic reaction?
If the bonds of the product are unstable, the potential energy increases->the enthalpy and internal energies increase->energy is absorbed, this is called endothermic reaction
what is transition temperature?
When one phase changes into other phase taking or releasing heat->temperature at which this happens is called transition temperature.
What is a cyclic process
The process in which the initial and final state are same and it forms a loop
Write the relation between delta H and delta U
delta H =delta U + delta ng RT
What is entropy?
->The degree of randomness or disorderedness
->The heat absorbed by the system in reverse process at a particular temperature.
->J/K
What is the general formula for finding entropy
Entropy during phase transition
delta S= delta H/T
What is Gibb’s free energy
-> The part of the energy which is used to do useful work.
delta G=-W
Three types of equilibrium:
Mechanical, Chemical, Thermal
What is free expansion
When ideal gas is allowed to expand against zero external pressure, the process is called free expansion.
What is inversion temperature
The temperature above which a gas hots is upon expansion.
Work done for stoppered expansion
W=-P ext (nRTf/Pf - nRTi/Pi)
State Poissons ratio
Gamma = Cp/Cv
State formula for standard Gibbs energy
-2.303RTlogKc
