Thermochemistry Flashcards
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
The amount of energy int he universe is constant
Define thermodynamics
Study of energy and its conversions
Define internal energy (E)
Sum of potential and kinetic energies
Define system
Portion of the universe, singled out for investigation
Define surroundings
Everything that exists outside of system of investigation
Define state function
Its value is dependent on the state of the system, and not how it arrived in that state (think of altitude vs distance)
Heat vs temp?
Heat is caused by a temperature difference
Define heat capacity
Amount of heat rquired to change temperature in a system by 1 celcius
Define extensive property
Depend on amount of matter in question
Define intensive property
Do not depend on amount of matter (color, density)
Define specific heat capacity
The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of something by 1 C
Define molar heat capacity
The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 mole of something by 1 C
Define calirimeter?
Measures the heat involved in a chemical reactiomn
What is container of calirimetr where reaction happens called?
bomb
