Thermochemistry Flashcards
Heat
The energy transferred between samples of matter because of a difference in their temperature.
Thermochemistry
The study of the changes on heat energy that accompany chemical reactions and physical changes.
Endothermic
Accompanied by or requiring the absorption of heat.
Exothermic
Accompanied by the release of heat.
Thermochemical equation
An equation that includes the quantity of heat released or absorbed during the reaction as written.
Calorimeter
A device used to measure the heat absorbed or released in a chemical or physical change.
Joule
The SI unit of heat energy as well as all other forms of energy.
Specific heat capacity
The amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of one gram of substance by one Celsius degree or one kelvin.
Enthalpy change
The amount of energy absorbed or lost by a system during a process at constant pressure.
Law of conservation of energy
Mass is neither created nor destroyed during ordinary chemical or physical reactions.
