Thermochemistry Flashcards
What is thermochemistry?
The study of energy changes that occur during chemical reactions.
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work or supply heat.
What is kinetic energy?
The energy of motion.
What is potential energy?
The energy of position composition.
What is heat?
Energy that flows across a temperature gradient from hot objects too cold.
How does heat flow?
It flows from high temperature areas to low temperature areas.
What is temperature a measure of?
The average kinetic energy of the molecules in a system.
What is thermal energy?
The sum of all kinetic energy in a substance.
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be converted from one form to another.
What is an exothermic process?
A process that releases heat to the surroundings.
Why is forming a chemical bond exothermic?
Because forming a chemical bond releases energy.
What is an endothermic process?
A process that absorbs heat from the surroundings.
Why are breaking chemical bonds endothermic?
Because they absorb energy.
What is a temperature change?
A change in kinetic energy. (Ek)
