Rates Of Reaction Flashcards
What is a rate
A rate is a ratio that measures how one variable changes compared to another variable.
What is a reaction rate
How your concentration changes over time.
What is molar concentration
How many moles of that chemical appear in a solution.
What is collision theory
A reaction occurs when particles collide with eachother with enough kinetic energy and at the correct orientation.
What is activation energy
The amount of energy that the colliding particles must have in order to react
How can you speed up reactions
Adding heat to change kinetic energy
Stirring adds more collisions
More particles=more collisions
State (gases move freely solids stuck in place)
Break up a solid ^ surface area
In general the higher the activation energy is for a certain reaction the slower that reaction will occur. Why would this be true?
It takes more energy
What’s a catalyst
A catalyst is a substance that can be added to a reaction to increase the rate without being used up by the reaction.
What’s an elementary reaction?
An elementary reaction is a reaction in which reactants are converted to products in. Single step.
What’s an intermediate
An intermediate is a product of one of the steps in a reaction that then becomes a reactant in a future step of a reaction.
What is each step in a multi step reaction
An Elementary reaction
What is the rate determining step
The longest step
What is differential rate law
It’s an equation that tells us exactly how fast a reaction will occur based on the initial concentrations of the reactants
What is the order of a reactant
The exponent that the reactant has in the rate law
