Thermo-remenant magnetism Flashcards
1
Q
What do rocks lose? At what?
A
Rocks lose their magnetic properties at the Curie temperature (~550°)
2
Q
What happens to rocks cooled below the curie temperature?
A
If an igneous rock is cooled below the Curie temperature in the presence of the earth’s magnetic field, the alingment of atoms is permanently frozen in rock
3
Q
Where does this process occur?
A
Occurs in basalts at mid-ocean ridges (MORBs)
