Magnetic field creation Flashcards
What five factors control the magnetic field?
The earth’s core
Convection currents
Rotation and Coriolis effect
Dynamo action
Magnetic field generation
How does the earth’s core affect the magnetic field?
The earth’s core has a solid inner core and a liquid outer core composed primarily of iron. The iron generates magnetic field
How do convection currents affect the magnetic filed?
Heat from the core causes molten material in the outer core to undergo convection. Hotter materials rise while cooler materials sink, creating convection currents
How does the Coriolis effect affect magnetic field?
The earth’s rotation induces the Coriolis effect, which causes moving fluids to deviate from a straight path. This creates a twisting motion in the molten material
How does the Dynao action affect the magnetic field?
The twisting motion of molten material, paired with electrical conductivity of the core, generates electrical currents in the outer core/ These electric currents generate a magnetic field process called Dynamo action
