A

o 20000 sans culottes and national guards trained loaded canon on the convention
o 40000 regular soldiers called in to dispel crowds – largest display of military force since the revolution began
o no shots fired – sans culottes withdrew
o convention prevented trouble – marched troops into the Fauberg saint-Antoine, the insurgents home territory and forcing the surrender of weapons
o 6000 cross examined and 42 national guards executed

5 October:
• royalist believed a plebiscite held in September for a non-monarchic constitution was rigged
• comte d’artois had landed at ile de’yeu – coast of the vendee
• pro-royalist demonstrations led by muscadins, factory and property owners who despaired of a republican government
• convention called on unemployed Jacobin army officers- 3 battalions
• faced with 25000 armed Parisians marching on the convention Paul barres was approached by Napoleon Bonaparte given permission to take command of the republic’s 5000-6000 troops
