Thermal Physics 3.4 Flashcards
define a thermodynamic system?
collection of molecules within a volume of space.
define a isolated system ?
system which does not allow energy or matter to enter or leave.
closed system?
matter cannot enter or leave
heat engine?
system which converts thermal energy into mechanical work
internal energy? (U)
sum of the potential and kinetic energies of its particles.
why do particles have potential energy?
- intermolecular bonds
- chemical bonds
- excited energy states in atoms
- nuclear energy states.
internal energy equation for a simple system:
U 3/2 p V
internal equation for a monatomic gas:
U = 3/2 nRT
define heat Q
spontaneous flow of energy in response to a difference i temperature. (high temp to low temp)
thermal equilibrium?
2 systems in thermal contact
equation for work providing pressure remains constant.
equation for work = pressure X change in volume.
0th law of thermodynamics
- if two systems are at the same temp - no flow of heat between them
- if 2 objects are brought together at diff temperature then their is a flow of heat.
define the first law of thermodynamics
when net heat flows into a system which does not work the internal energy changes according to the relationship. (FLT)
first law of thermodynamics
change in internal energy(U) = heat input (Q) – work output (W)
define the specific heat capacity?
= mass X SHC of a material X temperature change
