Thermal physics Flashcards
What is specific heat capacity?
The energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of the substance by 1 degree
What is the formula for specific heat capacity?
Energy transferred = Mass x specific heat capacity x temperature change
What is specific latent heat?
Specific latent heat is the energy needed to change the state of 1kg of the substance
What is the formula for specific latent heat?
Specific latent heat of fusion = Energy/Mass
How does evaporation occur?
When a particle at the surface has enough energy to escape from the liquid
How can the rate of evaporation be increased?
- Increasing surface area
- Increasing energy (heat)
- Increasing breeze (moving air)
What is conduction?
The vibration of particles passed objects which are in direct contact
What is convection?
The movement of fluids due to a change of temperature
