Thermal Physics Flashcards
What is the kinetic model
All matter is made up of particles (tiny balls)
Different materials have different types of particles.
The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas
What is brownian motion
Particles move in random directions taking a zig zag shaped path.
What happens on a temperature time graph when there is a change of state and why
There is a flat line as the energy is being used to change the state not heat it up
What is specific heat capacity
The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of a 1kg substance by 1 Degrees celcius
What is the equation for specific heat capacity
Change in energy / mass times temperature change.
What is thermal expansion
Substances get larger as they get hotter.
What is conduction
The process where vibrating particles transfer energy from their kinetic stores to those of neighbouring particles.
What is convection
The process where more energetic particles of a substance move from a hotter region to a cooler region -and they transfer energy.
