Thermal Physics Flashcards
What is internal energy
When energy is stored inside a system by the particles (atoms and molecules) that make up the system. It is also the total Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy of all the particles that make up a system.
The amount of energy stored in or released from a system at its temperature changes can be calculated using what equation
Change in thermal energy = mass x specific heat capacity x temperature change
The specific heat capacity of a substance is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature by how many kilograms of the substance by how many degrees Celsius
1 kilogram of the substance by 1 degrees Celsius
equation for energy for a change of state
mass x specific latent heat
E = ml
What is specific latent heat of fusion
change of state from a solid to liquid
What is specific latent heat of vaporisation
Change of state from liquid to vapour
Definition of latent heat
The energy needed for a substance to change state is called latent heat
All bodies (objects) no matter what temperature absorb and emit what
Infrared Radiation
The hotter the body the more infrared radiation it radiates in a given time
A good absorber is also a good what
a good emitter
What colour would be the best possible emitter
Black is the best colour
What colour does not reflect or transmit any radiation
The colour black
The temperature of a body increases when the body ? radiation faster than it ? radiation
absorbs and emits
A body at ? temperature is ? radiation at the same rate it is ? radiation
Constant, absorbing and emitting
what is conduction
the process by which heat or electricity is directly transmitted through the material of a substance
