Thermal Energy Transfer Flashcards

What is matter?
Anything that takes up space and has mass.
What are the states of matter?
One of the forms that matter can take, including solid, liquid, and gas.
What is energy?
What is kinetic energy?
The energy of an object because of motion. The word ‘kinetic’ comes from the Greek word for motion.
What is thermal energy?
What is temperature?
It measures the average kinetic energy of an object or substance.
What is heat?
The transfer of thermal energy due to temperature difference.
What is conduction?
The transfer of heat through a solid material by direct contact of particles.
What is convection?
The transfer of heat when in a fluid. It’s caused when hooter fluids rise and cooler fluids sink.
What is radiation?
The transfer of heat through empty space. No matter is required for the heat transfer to occur.
What is thermal equilibrium?
When heat flows from a higher temperature object to a lower temperature object until both objects have the same temperature.
What is a conductor?
What is an insulator?
