Thermal 1 Flashcards
Define specific heat capacity
the energy needed to raise the the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1K
Define internal energy
the sum of all the molecular kinetic energy and potential energy of a substance
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
Q = ΔU + W
Q = heat energy in (positive)
ΔU = increase in internal energy (increase in temperature) (positive)
W = work done by the system (positive)
What does work done equal? (thermal)
W = pΔV
p = constant pressure
V = volume
If gas gives heat energy to the surroundings, then Q is?
negative
If gas takes heat energy from the surroundings, then Q is?
positive
What is the lowest possible temperature?
absolute zero
What do the molecules of a substance have at absolute zero?
zero kinetic energy
What is the pressure at absolute zero?
0
