Mechanics 1 Flashcards
What is the difference between a vector and a scalar?
a vector is a quantity with both direction and magnitude, where a scalar is a quantity with only magnitude and no direction
Give 3 examples of a vector
- velocity
- displacement
- force
- acceleration
- momentum
Give 3 examples of a scalar
- speed
- direction
- mass
- time
Define mass
the amount of matter in an object
What does a free body diagram show
all the forces acting on that object
Define a moment
a force multiplied by perpendicular distance from the point to the line of action of the force
Define the centre of mass
the point at which the mass of an object, and hence its weight, appears to act
What is the principle of moments
for a body in equilibrium, the sum of the clockwise moments is equal to the sum of the anticlockwise moments, about any point
What are the two conditions for a body to be in equilibium?
- the sum of the clockwise moments is equal to the sum of the anticlockwise moments, about any point
- the resultant force in any direction is zero
Define a couple
a pair of forces of equal size which act parallel to each other but in opposite directions
What is a moment of couple defined as?
force multiplied by perpendicular distance between the lines of action of the forces
Where is the centre of mass in a uniform, regular object?
at its centre
A moment due to a couple is known as its…?
torque
What is torque equal to?
one of the forces multiplied by perpendicular separation turning effect
