theremodyamics Flashcards
1st law of thermodynamics
energy cannot be created or destroyed
2nd law of thermodynamics
heat is transferred from one body to another body
only if the two bodies are at different temperatures,
the heat flows from the body at the highest temperature to the body at the lowest temperature
3rd law of thermodynamics
the entropy of a system approaches a constant value as the temperature approaches absolute zero
conduction (solid)
vibrating particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles.
kinetic energy from heat - particles vibrate faster coliding with other particles to evenly distribute heat.
thermal conductivity
metals - high
plastics - low
fluids - low
convection (fluids)
particles gain kenetic erergy - move faster
random diffusio causes energetic particles to move to cooler area
particles left in warmer region are spread out causing the fluid to expand - less dense
conduction vs convection
both particles gain kenetic energy
conduction - energy is transfered
convection - particles move
radiation
energy is carried by infared waves (travel through a vaccum)
Q = mcΔT
